Google has announced the roll-out of a new feature for Google Maps on Wear OS-equipped devices, now enabling offline use of the application. This long-awaited update enables users to download maps to their connected watches, making navigation easier without the need for a nearby smartphone or an active internet connection.
This feature was originally introduced at Google I/O 2023, and its rollout to devices is now beginning to take shape. With this update, users can download specific areas of Google Maps directly to their Wear OS watch, enabling them to continue using navigation even when in areas without network coverage, or when they prefer to leave their phone at home.
To use this feature, users simply need to access the Google Maps app on their watch, choose a geographical area to download, and it will be available for offline use. This enhancement is particularly useful for outdoor sports enthusiasts, travelers, or those who wish to keep their phone in airplane mode to save battery power while still having access to navigation.
This rollout is underway and should be available to all Wear OS watch users in the coming weeks. Google has not yet specified whether this feature will be available on all versions of Wear OS or only on the most recent models, but this initiative is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to improve the autonomy and independence of connected watches running under its operating system.
