The second-generation AirPlay protocol has now been updated, enabling you to connect multiple speakers or audio output devices. Of course, this gives you a certain flexibility of use. AirPlay 2 has upgraded the streaming protocol supported by Apple and certain third-party devices to enable a host device, such as a Mac, to select multiple speakers or audio output devices simultaneously. This gives you flexibility, such as using an inexpensive set of speakers or streaming sound to multiple rooms without the need for a built-in multi-room sound system, although many also support AirPlay 2.
However, you may be wondering if there’s a way to stream video from your iPhone to an Apple TV, which uses your TV’s speakers as an output, and have the sound also stream to another set of speakers. This is because, on the iPhone, if the user selects several AirPlay destinations, the video stops playing to the Apple TV. The solution is to use the Apple TV directly, from the streaming tab on the right. Note that this works with an Apple TV equipped with AirPlay 2 (third generation or higher). Here’s how to do it:
- Press and hold the TV button on your Apple remote control.
- In the dialog box that appears from the right, go to the AirPlay icon at the bottom.
- In the Speakers menu, select multiple speakers
- Press the TV button to exit the selection view, then press again to exit the menu
