Google recently launched its new Pixel 9 range, including the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold models, which incorporate several notable improvements in photography and video. One of the most eagerly-awaited new features was the “Video Boost” functionality, a technology that enables, among other things, 8K video thanks to artificial intelligence-based upscaling.
Function unavailable on a €1,900 device
However, while all models in the Pixel 9 series benefit from certain advances in Video Boost technology, there are some notable differences. For example, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, despite its hefty €1900 price tag, doesn’t support 8K upscaling or Super Resolution Zoom in video, unlike the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL models. The latter two are capable of filming in 8K, but only thanks to cloud processing via the Video Boost feature, and not natively from the device.
In addition to these limitations, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold still offers other features from the Video Boost suite, such as HDR Plus and Night Sight video, which improve the quality of low-light videos. For users looking to make the most of their smartphone’s video and photo capabilities, the Pro and Pro XL models might therefore be more appropriate choices.
A disappointment for photo and Google enthusiasts
This differentiation in functionality between the models could influence purchasing decisions, particularly for photography and video enthusiasts looking for the most advanced technologies offered by Google.
