Google is preparing to replace Google Assistant with Gemini, its advanced artificial intelligence capable of doing much more than its predecessor. One of Gemini’s new features will be integrated into the Gmail app for Android: the ability to summarize long emails.
According to information revealed by Assemble Debug, an Android expert and contributor to Android Authority, a “Summarize this email” button will appear below the email subject. Clicking on it will display a window containing a bullet-point summary of the email. This isn’t a new feature per se; it’s already possible to have any chatbot summarize an e-mail by copying and pasting its content. Integration into a Google service – with the data collection issues that this entails – is a novelty. Users will be able to give their opinion on the quality of the summary and copy it to the clipboard.
This feature, already available in the web version of Gmail for Workspace users, should be very useful for emails containing large amounts of text. Google could officially unveil it at the Google I/O 2024 event, scheduled for May 14, alongside advances inAndroid 15, Android TV/Google TV, ChromeOS, Wear OS 5, Chrome and Gemini.
Gemini’s email digest feature almost ready
Assemble Debug had already spotted a non-functional “Summarize this email” button in version 2024.03.31.621006929 of the Gmail application. Now, in version 2024.04.21.626860299, the button works and allows you to summarize the email. Powered by Gemini, Google’s powerful AI model, this feature could be available to all users or require a subscription to the Google One AI Premium plan – as is the case for the web chatbot.
Although the exact release date is not yet known, the speed with which this feature is progressing suggests that it will soon be integrated into a stable version of the Gmail application. The integration of AI-generated email summaries into Gmail for Android has the potential to simplify email processing, so let’s hope it won’t be reserved for paying subscribers.
