On September 9, Apple unveiled its new AirPods 4 earphones. These high-end Bluetooth headphones offer advanced features for totally personalized listening. Here are all the details.
For the first time, the AirPods have a number, and this new version comes with significant technological improvements, including artificial intelligence and noise reduction options.
Artificial intelligence for communication
The highlight of AirPods 4 is the integration of the H2 processor, which enables the activation of advanced artificial intelligence functionalities. Among these new features, Apple has introduced an intelligent noise reduction function. During a call, AI is able to reduce ambient noise so that your voice is clearer, offering better sound quality for your interlocutors, even in a noisy environment.
AirPods’ on-board sensors also detect your head movements. So, for the first time, it’s possible to respond to Siri with a simple movement of the head: a “yes” or “no” nod is all it takes to accept or decline a request, an interaction that greatly simplifies the use of the voice assistant in situations where verbal commands are impractical.
Noise reduction and automatic volume adjustment
Another major improvement in the AirPods 4 is the introduction of noise reduction for the first time in this range. This means that users will be able to enjoy immersive listening without being disturbed by outside noise, a particularly eagerly-awaited feature.
What’s more, an intelligent function automatically adjusts the sound volume. When you start talking to someone in real life, the music volume drops, then rises again as soon as the conversation ends. This option provides real comfort in social situations, avoiding repeated handling of the earphones.
AirPods Sport: the active noise reduction revolution without in-ear monitors
Alongside the AirPods 4, Apple unveils a second model, designed for the most active users: the AirPods Sport. This model is Apple’s first to offer active noise reduction without in-ear monitors, a technological feat. AirPods Sport adapt to your environment thanks to anadaptive audio option, adjusting noise reduction according to your location or the surrounding noise level. This flexibility makes for a more pleasant, personalized listening experience.
As with AirPods 4, AirPods Sport also feature a function that automatically adjusts the volume when you start a conversation. So you no longer need to manually interrupt the music when you’re chatting to someone.
USB-C and simplified recharging
Apple has also made a long-awaited update to the AirPods’ charging unit. This is now equipped with a USB-C port, responding to growing user demand for standardized connectors and making it easier to recharge your headphones with the most common cables.
Availability and price
AirPods 4 will be available from September 20, 2024, with pre-order options already open. The basic model will be priced at $129, while the version with active noise reduction will be offered at $179. These prices position the AirPods 4 as an affordable option, while bringing major innovations that evolve the everyday user experience.
